School of Medical Laboratory Science

The UF Health Jacksonville School of Medical Laboratory Science offers a one-year program for selected students who have earned a bachelor’s degree in biological, chemical, health sciences or clinical laboratory science and are looking to further their education and expand their career opportunities into the Medical Laboratory Sciences. The program provides graduates with the necessary eligibility requirements to qualify for examination by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist. Once graduates are ASCP certified, they are eligible for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of Florida.

What is Medical Laboratory Science?

Medical Laboratory Science offers exciting possibilities for those who want a career in the medical field. Medical laboratory scientists are clinical scientists who perform complex analyses making use of hundreds of scientific procedures. They are able to recognize the interdependency of tests and have knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results. They work with pathologists and other members of the healthcare team to help diagnose and treat disease. They must perform their duties with quality and patient safety in mind. Medical laboratory science is a challenging and rapidly changing field that offers opportunity for advancement in all areas of the health care field. Examples of laboratory tests performed by Clinical Laboratory Scientists include:

  • Analysis of cardiac enzyme activity released during a heart attack
  • Detection of DNA markers for genetic diseases
  • Detection of the abnormal cells that cause leukemia
  • Identification of the type of bacteria causing an infection
