UF Health/Jacksonville and the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville, department of surgery is accepting applications presently for a one-year, full-time Trauma and Medical Psychology clinical fellowship available after September 4, 2020. UF Health Jacksonville is a not-for-profit 600+ bed academic hospital in Jacksonville, FL, that serves individuals across the life span. It is the only Level I Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving northeast Florida and South Georgia, and is the area’s sole American College of Surgeons-verified Level I Trauma Center, the highest designation for trauma programs nationally. The goal of this program is to provide the fellow with experiential clinical training focused on developing advanced competencies in trauma and medical psychology that will prepare them for independent practice in a medical setting and trauma center.
Clinically, the fellowship is focused on providing inpatient and outpatient care to injured trauma survivors receiving surgical intervention at a level 1 trauma center and acute care surgery patients receiving emergency procedures for critical illness. This includes 2000 hours of direct clinical services on the Level I Trauma/Critical Care Service, including the following: Assessments of traumatically injured patients; assessment and referral of medical patients with co-morbid psychiatric illnesses; crisis management of patients with acute medical needs following traumatic injury and/or disability; individual therapy for the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress reactions, and other adjustment issues following traumatic injury; crisis and grief counseling to patients and family members; in-patient consultation/liaison services to other surgical sub-specialties (i.e. orthopeadics, cardiovascular, surgical oncology); and overall stress management services to the medical team and other allied health professionals. The most common patient populations served include those with internal and orthopedic injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, limb amputations, polytrauma, and various other conditions and injuries, in addition to patients with emergent non-injury medical conditions. The fellow will be a member of a dynamic multidisciplinary team which includes surgeons, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, social workers, as well as physical and occupational therapists. The psychology service itself includes two supervising faculty psychologists and graduate students acquiring external training for their doctoral programs. The fellow will also be afforded the opportunity to gain experience in supervising these graduate students under the supervision of licensed faculty.
In addition to this robust clinical training, the fellowship also includes opportunities for participation in various research collaborations that include researchers in health psychology, trauma, acute care surgery, and other medical disciplines. The fellow will have the opportunity to design and implement their own research project, will have access to an extensive and comprehensive data base, and will have opportunities to contribute to manuscript development with ongoing and completed research projects as well as present research findings at local and national conferences. Also available are opportunities for teaching and didactic in a broad range of topic areas germane to the clinical experience.
Eligible candidates must be US citizens who have obtained a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in clinical or counseling psychology from an APA accredited institution and who have completed a 2000-hour clinical internship.
