Grand opening of NCCU

On May 5, the Neurocritical Care Unit, or NCCU, celebrated its grand opening. The NCCU is a newly designated area for patients with neurologic conditions requiring an intensive level of care.

David Meysenburg, MSN, RN, is the division director of critical care at UF Health Jacksonville.

“This specialized unit will enhance our multidisciplinary team’s cohesiveness so we can optimize patient outcomes, improve recovery times and offer personalized support to patients and families,” Meysenburg said.

Specialists use the latest clinical guidelines and research to implement the most advanced surgical and interventional treatments. They develop personalized treatment plans focused on enhancing neurological recovery.

Kimberly McPhearson, DO, UF Health Jacksonville neurologist and neurocritical care specialist, is the medical director for the NCCU. She is board-certified in internal medicine and neurocritical care.

“I always encourage our patients and families when they leave the NCCU to come back and do a victory lap to celebrate their recovery,” McPhearson said. “This helps our neuro team to see what we're fighting for in these patients.”

In the NCCU, nursing staff, neurosurgeons, physicians, therapists and technologists will work together in closer alignment — enhancing the continuity, coordination and quality of care for our patients at the most critical time.

As part of our patient-centered focus, we also provide support services for family members during what can be a stressful time.
