Consultation-Liaison Services
Consultation-liaison services, or psychosomatic medicine, are provided at UF Health
Jacksonville. Consultation-liaison psychiatry is dedicated to assisting clinical
staff and patients by providing evaluation and treatment of psychiatric illnesses
which can arise in the presence of a primary medical illness. Prompt evaluation
and treatment of psychiatric illnesses is often essential in optimizing care for
the medical patient as underlying psychiatric issues can often exacerbate the primary
medical issue, increase length of stay in the hospital or hinder effective medical
treatment. The psychiatric consultant can help distinguish if psychiatric symptoms
are the result of a primary psychiatric issue, the medical illness, the medications
being used or a combination of all these factors and then make appropriate recommendations
to best help the treatment teams provide optimal care for their patients.
Mental Health Services in Primary Care
- Individual and group therapy to patients who are seen by community health medical
providers
- Group therapy (currently a men's support group and women's weight management group)
- Smoking cessation group for patients, employees and people from the community
- Providing education to providers on mental health issues
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
UF Health Psychiatry is now offering transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS. This is an FDA-approved
therapy for individuals who have treatment-resistant depression — a condition where antidepressant medications
have failed or when the side effects of medications are intolerable.
TMS uses a focused electromagnet to stimulate underactive cells in targeted areas of the brain. The
magnetic
pulses generate an electrical current and raise brain activity to normal levels.
Treatment sessions last 30 minutes and are typically performed five days per week over a six-week period.
