Neuroendovascular surgery treats vascular disorders of the brain, head, neck and spine to prevent stroke, aneurysms and related conditions. Doctors use advanced imaging and devices to reach problem areas through blood vessels. Most often, they can do this through a tiny opening in the wrist or groin. This minimally invasive treatment approach offers many benefits for patients, including faster recovery times.
At UF Health Jacksonville, our neuroendovascular team includes experts in neurology, neurosurgery and radiology who work together to provide fast, effective and often lifesaving care to improve blood flow to the brain. Our goal is to diagnose quickly, treat with precision, and help patients recover as safely and quickly as possible.

What stroke symptoms should I watch for?
Some neuroendovascular symptoms can be a sign of a serious brain blood vessel problem that can lead to a stroke. Call 911 right away if you notice (BEFAST):
- Balance problems
- Eyesight changes
- Face drooping
- Arm weakness
- Speech trouble
- Time to call 911
Other head and neck symptoms that should not be ignored:
- Brief vision loss
- Frequent or severe headaches
- Short episodes of confusion
- Unexplained dizziness
How do we treat these conditions?
Our team uses minimally invasive procedures to treat blood vessel problems in the brain and spine, such as:
1. Mechanical thrombectomy
This procedure removes a blood clot during a stroke. It is done quickly and often requires a short ICU stay.
2. Aneurysm coiling and flow diversion
This is a minimally invasive treatment to safely seal or reroute blood flow away from a weak spot in the brain, helping prevent it from bleeding or bursting.
3. Carotid artery stenting
This treatment opens narrowed arteries in the neck to improve blood flow to the brain.
4. AVM or AVF embolization
These procedures block abnormal blood vessel connections to prevent bleeding or other problems.
5. Vertebroplasty
This procedure stabilizes certain spine fractures and may allow patients to go home the same or next day.
6. MMA embolization
This treatment blocks small arteries feeding a chronic brain bleed, helping to shrink and heal without open surgery.
7. Diagnostic cerebral angiography
This test uses imaging and a small catheter to look closely at blood vessels in the brain. This can be completed as a day procedure and patients will go home on the same day.
