One of the chief residents at the University of Florida College of Medicine-Jacksonville won a Young Trainee Research Award from the southern region of the American Federation for Medical Research.
S. Hammad Jafri, M.D., a chief medical resident, won the award last month at the federation’s annual meeting in New Orleans. He presented research that showed vitamin D can reduce stress in the inner lining of blood cells. That stress, caused by things such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity can contribute to heart attacks, strokes and other major health problems.
Jafri, graduated last year from the UF internal medicine residency program and is a graduate of Karachi Sindh Medical College in Pakistan.
Jafri worked with Michael J. Hass, Ph.D., a research associate professor, on the project titled "Inhibition of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress by Vitamin D in Endothelial Cells."
