UF Health Jacksonville receives cancer registry recognition

UF Health Jacksonville is a recipient of the 2018 Pat Strait Award for Excellence in Cancer Abstracting. The recognition by the Florida Cancer Data System and the Florida Department of Health singles out facilities that have met or exceeded the national quality standards for timeliness and completeness in cancer reporting.

Five cancer registry specialists at UF Health Jacksonville – Elaine Geoghagan, Janice Hargrove, Zoritsa Mojica-Robayo, Nicole Sanford and Patricia Spry – are responsible for helping the organization achieve this quality goal.

Tumor registry operations are a result of all health care documentation entered into one abstract. The data that is entered into the abstract starts from day one of diagnosis of a malignancy presented to UF Health Jacksonville, to first course of treatment, whether it be surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, immunotherapy, palliative care, hospice or survival care.

The cancer registry submits this information to the Florida Cancer Data System, the state’s central registry. The results of the data are then posted on the American Cancer Society website for mortality, morbidity, incidence and survival analysis.

UF Health Jacksonville has received this award 12 times since 1996.
