Sofia Muenyi, MD

September 15- October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. During this time the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America are celebrated and recognized nationally. As part of this celebration, UF Health Jacksonville is spotlighting a few employees who share what they’re Hispanic heritage means to them and how it influences them in their daily work with patients.

This spotlight features Sofia Muenyi, M.D., assistant professor, medical director, UF Health Family Medicine – Crystal Springs

What do you find most rewarding about working with patients in your field?

The most rewarding experience working in family medicine is being able to take care of the whole family. It allows me to be a part of my patients lives and build a stronger connection with them.

How do you feel you help grow the representation of Hispanics in the medical field?

Hispanics make up 6% of physicians nationwide. Mentoring the new generation is extremely important to me. My hope is to aid in increasing representation in the medical field.

How does having representation in the medical field affect the overall patient experience?

Representation is extremely important. Being able to speak/understand my patients’ language and their culture allows for an increase in comfortability which aids with interventional treatment/prevention plans.

What does your Hispanic heritage mean to you?

My Hispanic heritage is everything to me. It is a representation of who I am and my core values. It is a combination of family and pride. My heritage contributed to my passion and drive that brought me into the medical field.
