Deviated nasal septum

If you are like the majority of people, the two sides of your nose are not created equally. The septum — the thin wall inside the nose that should be in the exact center — is often a bit crooked. Yet, when it is just a slight deviation, you probably won’t experience any issues. Problems can occur, however, when the variation is pronounced, which is called a deviated nasal septum.

Deviated nasal septum: What you need to know

  • Whether you were born with a deviated septum or developed one from injury, it can cause breathing difficulties, nasal congestion, chronic sinusitis, headaches or snoring.
  • If these symptoms persist, you may want to visit an otolaryngologist or Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for further evaluation and treatment.
  • Our ENT specialists may examine your nasal passages further with a nasal endoscopy, an easy test that allows a magnified view of the nasal cavity.
  • For some patients, the best course of treatment might be medications to relieve symptoms. For others, surgery may be the most appropriate solution.
  • Our ENT specialists will talk with you to discuss options, such as a surgical procedure called a septoplasty. Using minimally invasive techniques, your physician would be able to repair the deviated nasal septum thus removing any obstruction to your breathing.
