Neonatal resuscitation room

Immediately adjacent to the obstetric operating rooms in the Labor and Delivery Unit is a special room staffed with neonatologists who provide split-second care to babies born prematurely or in distress.

Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)

Premature and critically ill newborns receive medical care in our 48-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, or NICU. As a Level III regional referral center, we provide intensive care for infants from around Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia.

Our University of Florida team of caregivers includes board-certified faculty neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, transport specialists, occupational and speech therapists, dietitians and case managers.

Our specially trained support staff is on hand 24/7 to respond to newborn infants in need of highly skilled care. In addition, a full-time pharmacist visits the NICU daily to monitor the medication needs of the newborns. Every patient is assigned to a case manager to help the family from admission to discharge.

The team provides for the newborns, from premature infants who require complex critical care, to infants born at term. The NICU staff also prepares families for life at home with the necessary training in infant care, CPR and appropriate follow-up care.

Video cameras are in use to monitor the patients and provide access for parents to have virtual visits from the Labor and Delivery Unit, off-site at the delivery hospital or from home.

Kangaroo care is the bonding time with mothers using skin-to-skin touch while they are rocked. In addition, trained volunteers, under the supervision of a registered nurse, provide daily comfort measures by holding the babies, if needed.

Baby Care One

Baby Care One is a neonatal transport program at UF Health Jacksonville. This was the first program of its kind in Northeast Florida. The Baby Care One team is composed of a neonatal nurse and a respiratory therapist, who are on call 24/7. Together, they provide support for other area hospitals to better prepare them in the stabilization of sick newborns.

Our transport isolette is a little NICU on wheels, capable of offering any care we can offer in the NICU, from line placement for fluid administration to ventilation.
