The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that sits below the voice box. It makes hormones that control the way the body uses energy. When thyroid hormones are out of balance it can affect the whole body. UF Health endocrinologists are trained to recognize the subtle hints of thyroid disease. In addition, we offer diagnosis and treatment for enlarged thyroid, goiter, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer.
These conditions are evaluated through blood testing and, if indicated, thyroid ultrasound. Fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid is a procedure that removes thyroid cells for examination. This helps the endocrinologist determine the best approach for the patient. Candidates for fine-needle aspiration of the thyroid include patients with thyroid nodules of sufficient size, prior radiation treatment or a family history of thyroid cancer.

UF Health research scientists make medicine better every day. They discover new ways to help people by running clinical trials. When you join a clinical trial, you can get advanced medical care. Sometimes years before it's available everywhere. You can also help make medicine better for everyone else. If you'd like to learn more about clinical trials, visit our clinical trials page.
