Evaluation and diagnosis

The Neuromuscular Disease Program at the UF Health Neuroscience Institute offers the following evaluation services:

  • State-of-the-art neurophysiologic assessment including:
    • Nerve conduction/EMG studies
    • Single-fiber EMG quantitative sensory threshold determinations
    • Quantitative motor testing
    • Tremor analysis
  • Neuropathologic assessment of nerve and muscle biopsies

University of Florida physicians are subspecialty trained in neuromuscular disease and neurophysiologic assessment. Our neuromuscular specialists perform over 2,500 nerve conduction/EMG tests annually and are highly trained in this important neurophysiologic procedure.

Treatment options

The UF Health Jacksonville Neuromuscular Disease Program offers the following:

  • A Peripheral Neuropathy Association-designated Neuropathy Center
  • Physical and exercise therapy
  • Speech and occupational therapy
  • Inpatient/outpatient consultations
  • Psychological counseling
  • Educational and support group programs in ALS, peripheral neuropathy and myasthenia gravis
  • Pioneering research

Community and Patient Programs: Neuromuscular disease

Our community and patient programs provide great value to patients, families and loved ones. People can find support, educational materials, expert consultants and more. In most instances, these programs are offered free of charge.

  • ALS Support Group

    The Florida Chapter of the ALS Association offers monthly educational and support group meetings for persons with ALS and their family members.

  • Myasthenia Gravis Support Group

    A monthly support group for myasthenia gravis patients and their families.

  • Tai Chi for Neurology Patients

    Tai chi classes for patients and caregivers with neurologic conditions such as Parkinson's, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and neuropathy.

  • Yoga for Neurology Patients

    Yoga classes for patients and caregivers with neurology conditions such as Parkinson's, stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and neuropathy.
