About me
Mayur K. Virarkar, MD, is an academic radiologist and physician leader specializing in abdominal, oncologic, and neuroradiologic imaging. He serves as Assistant Professor and Chief of the Division of Abdominal and Body Imaging, and Director of Research and Quality in the Department of Radiology at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville.
Dr. Virarkar's clinical expertise spans oncologic imaging, PET/MRI integration, multimodality diagnostic assessment, and intervention-guided procedures across gastrointestinal, gynecologic, and urologic malignancies. His leadership portfolio encompasses quality systems design, clinical research infrastructure, AI-enabled radiology workflows, and MRI protocol optimization. He is a Certified Imaging Informatics Professional (CIIP), Certified Healthcare Financial Professional (CHFP), and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSS-BB), and Executive MBA from the Kellogg School of Management, where he was recognized with the Dean's Leadership Award.
Dr. Virarkar holds a leadership position as Co-Chair and Director of Research for the Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Disease-Focused Panel at the Society of Abdominal Radiology, serves as an expert panel member on the ACR Appropriateness Criteria (Systemic Oncology), and is an ARCH-AI Community Learning Member. He is the Principal Investigator for three active institutional review board studies focused on AI-enabled report drafting and foundational model development, and serves as HOPPR Catalyst institutional lead and Epic Radiology Modernization Champion.
His scholarly output includes 100+ peer-reviewed publications and book chapters on oncologic imaging, radiomics, quantitative imaging biomarkers, AI integration, and quality improvement. He has authored multiple invited reviews in Radiologic Clinics of North America, American Journal of Roentgenology, Abdominal Radiology, and Cancers, and serves as a guest editor for major radiology journals.
Dr. Virarkar completed clinical fellowship training at The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in abdominal, thoracic, and neuroradiology, and completed a visiting radiology fellowship at Städtisches Klinikum Karlsruhe, Germany through the European School of Radiology. He maintains an active clinical practice while leading departmental and enterprise-level initiatives focused on operational excellence, value-based imaging, patient safety, and research innovation.
