At UF Health Jacksonville, the Emergency Department is divided into treatment areas according to a patient's condition, age and chief complaint.

Trauma center

Our Level I trauma center — UF Health TraumaOne — is staffed 24 hours a day by a team of trauma/critical care surgeons and emergency medicine physicians. Our trauma system incorporates three air ambulances and critical care ground transports serving all of Northeast Florida and Southern Georgia.

Intensive care unit (ICU-ED)

This unit is a 19-bed monitored area with five resuscitation bays. Critically ill medical patients and patients who need continuous monitoring of their vital signs are evaluated and stabilized in this area.

Pediatric Emergency Center

The department is a fully-equipped center with a separate triage area, waiting room, three-bay resuscitation area and treatment facility for the more than 22,000 pediatric patients seen annually. It is equipped to deal with all levels of pediatric care. It is staffed 24 hours a day by board certified, subspecialty trained pediatric emergency physicians, board certified emergency physicians, emergency medicine and pediatrics residents, and pediatric emergency medicine fellows.

Fast track

Patients with fractures, lacerations, abdominal pain, eye/ear/nose/throat complaints, or gynecologic emergencies are usually evaluated in this 13-bed area. The Flexible Care Area is expandable to 26 monitored beds in the event of a multiple casualty incident (MCI). Patients with minor complaints, such as the need for a wound recheck or suture removal, simple infections or medicine refills, are also triaged to this portion of the Emergency Department.

Clinical decision unit (CDU)

Patients with serious complaints that would benefit from an extended observation period may be placed in the CDU. This enables the medical staff the opportunity to assess over time whether the patient should be admitted to the hospital or can be safely discharged home.

Chest Pain Center

The UF Health Jacksonville Chest Pain Center is a state-of-the-art facility staffed with experts who specialize in providing a higher level of care to patients with heart attack symptoms. It is the first chest pain center in Florida accredited by the American College of Cardiology as a Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI and Resuscitation, the highest designation available for such centers.
