Specialists within the Neonatology division provide care for:

  • Premature infants
  • Babies with low birth weight
  • Babies experiencing respiratory distress
  • Infants with congenital conditions (such as cleft palate)
  • Infants affected by hypoxia
  • Babies with hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice)

The neonatology and newborn nursery ensures all babies are screened for hearing problems and medical or genetic conditions before being discharged from the hospital. Screening results are shared with the baby’s pediatrician or primary care physician to allow for any needed follow-up care and treatment.

Baby Care One

Baby Care One is a neonatal transport service at UF Health Jacksonville. This was the first program of its kind in Northeast Florida, formed more than 25 years ago. Our service includes a neonatal flight program for critically ill infants. Baby Care One has transported patients from the Everglades to New York and many places in between.

The Baby Care One team is comprised of a neonatal nurse, respiratory therapist, paramedic and EMT who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Together, they provide outreach education for outlying hospitals to better prepare them in the stabilization of sick newborns.
