UF Health Orthopaedic Surgery in Jacksonville is made up of an multidisciplinary team of physicians and health care providers with expertise in arthroscopy, sports medicine, joint reconstruction and replacement, trauma and more. UF faculty orthopaedic surgeons treat conditions and illnesses involving bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and fascia of both children and adults. We offer specialized clinical programs in:

Rehabilitation Services

Rehabilitation can occur at any point in your care. Your surgeon will determine which therapists you see and for how long.

You will be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist, or PT. This may begin as soon as the day after your surgery. The PT will assist you with getting out of bed and moving safely in accordance with the recommendations of your orthopaedic surgeon. He or she will teach you how to increase your mobility. Before being discharged, the PT will review your home therapy program with you and your caregivers.

Following surgery, a person's ability to take care of their daily living tasks can be impaired due to pain, restrictions of movement or weakness. An occupational therapist, or OT, will assist you in regaining your previous level of independence by having you perform daily living tasks safely through training in the use of adaptive equipment. Occupational therapy will enable you to return home safely and with confidence following your surgery.

Fracture Liaison Service

The Fracture Liaison Service is for patients ages 50 and older who have experienced a fracture, meaning a break in a bone. This type of fracture may be a sign of osteoporosis. FLS is designed to diagnose and treat osteoporosis to prevent additional fractures.

Patients receive a full evaluation, including a bone-density scan, lab tests, a review of their medical history and X-rays. The service provides a personalized health plan with recommendations for nutrition, exercise, supplements and medications.

Limb Preservation Program

The Limb Preservation Program at UF Health Jacksonville is for patients with Type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease facing limb amputation from non-healing wounds. Orthopaedic and vascular surgeons work to save limbs through proactive surgical procedures. Our surgeons are skilled in treating complex wounds that require care by a multidisciplinary medical team.

Diabetes

Patients with diabetes are at greater risk of developing non-healing wounds of the legs or feet than patients without diabetes. Close monitoring of symptoms, such as numbness and loss of feeling in feet and toes, will allow for prompt treatment of developing wounds.

Cardiovascular diseases

Plaque build-up in the arteries causes arterial disease that may lead to limb compromise. Arterial diseases may be caused by diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, tobacco use and obesity.

Diagnosis and treatment

Examination of the affected area of the foot or leg may include noninvasive tests, such as a CT scan, an MRI and X-rays. Customized treatments plans aim to preserve the limb to avoid amputation through surgical and nonsurgical methods.
