The Infectious Diseases (PGY-2) specialty residency provides the resident with a robust experience in management of patients with infectious diseases across multiple different inpatient service lines including: infectious diseases consults, medical and surgical intensive care, cardiothoracic surgery, and emergency medicine. This goal of this program is for the resident to become well-versed in the multiple facets of infectious diseases, microbiology, and antimicrobial stewardship. The program is new and will be seeking accreditation by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

As a member of the health care team, the resident assumes responsibility and accountability for safe and appropriate drug therapy and efficient delivery of care to patients. The resident is also involved in the academic, administrative, formulary management, and clinical drug research activities of the department.

Purpose and Goals

PGY2 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency programs to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced prac¬tice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.

The Infectious Disease Pharmacy Practice Residency is an organized, directed postgraduate program that centers on developing a mastery of knowledge and an expert level of competency in infectious disease pharmacy practice. The goals of the UF Health Jacksonville PGY2 Infectious Diseases Residency Program are to develop the resident’s dedication and skills necessary to:

  • be a specialized practitioner with the confidence, competence and compassion necessary to provide complex medication recommendations that meets the needs of infectious disease patients
  • be a fully integrated member of the interdisciplinary team
  • provide safe, effective, and appropriate medication therapy to patients
  • effectively educate patients/family members, students and health care professionals regarding infectious disease medication issues
  • demonstrate leadership for infectious disease practice through participation in interdisciplinary committees and planning groups to improve care for patients
  • conduct research in the infectious diseases environment to improve medication use and pharmacy practice

Program

Due to the active involvement of a highly skilled and motivated team of pharmacy practitioners with a variety of medical services, the resident is provided with a wide range of opportunities and experiences in the provision of patient care.
